Hi everyone. I've recently been trying to get on top of different aspects of the music world. There are so many things that I tend to push to one side or brush under the carpet. As you may have seen, I've been trying to get a grip on playlisting but it's taking a lot longer to set up then I'd like!
I also find that I put typing up my sheet music on the back burner and this hit me hard recently when I realised that I hadn't typed up one of the wedding anniversary pieces and I've had to learn it all by ear again😣
Lastly, and this sounds really bad I guess. I don't compose at all really anymore! All of my pieces are ones that I have written over the years. I think I've actually only written 2 in the last 6 months which is terrible for me.
To combat these, I'm trying to find an hour every other day to split into 20 min sessions and see what I can achieve. It's started ok I guess but I'm having to now find time to schedule in these things which seems weird. I'm not particularly organised so it's a sort of half year resolution I guess.
I was just wondering though how all you guys out there are getting on. Is there something to do with the music world that you avoid like the plague and leave well alone? I'm interested to see if there is main point of pain and also how you combat these issues.
As always, thanks for the support and for reading and any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
Sorry for the late response guys! I've had so many exams and accompying to do recently that I can't remember whether I'm coming or going! Thank you to you both for the honesty and ideas. I was writing music for piano and strings and other electronic instruments but I'm finding it easier to keep on top of solo piano pieces. I do have 3 or 4 tracks I would love to put a beat over to see how it goes but I'm debating whether to just collaborate for these. I'm currently working on some slightly different styles at the moment and I'm enjoying the jazz chords at the moment.
As for playlisting, I'm trying to create more of my own playlists and keep them to 50 tracks tops but have 7-8 different ones I can update. Hopefully going to get them finalised over the summer. It would be good to try and share all this wonderful music I listen to for the articles in better categorised playlists!
As always, I know I can head to the forum for some ideas, inspiration and motivation!
i think creativity is like a muscle and you have to keep training it. i try to find a balance between working on existing ideas/next releases and composing new ones. so setting some time every day to do this is a good idea, even if it's only 20-30 minutes.
What are you working on in terms of playlisting? you mean editorials? creating your own playlists or submitting to existing ones?
I know the feeling. Aside from my last release Zuhause I haven't composed anything new in a couple of months. If I find myself in some sort of a creative low, I try to fill those hours/days/weeks with tasks usually don't enjoy or want to do.
I can't make myself compose music. It just happens, at least if I want to write music that really means something to me. The next 6 piano pieces I will (hopefully) release this year are all old fragments or melodies I developed into full pieces. Some of them are more than 10 years old and I found them as handwritten sketches. I had not been able to develop them in a way I liked them 10 years ago. So maybe refining, re-working or finishing tracks could be something you can do. It feels like composing although the ideas are already there :)
Best, Philipp
