Hello everyone,
I was wondering how people felt about the impact AI will have in the future, particularly in our world of modern classical piano.
It seems clear that AI is/will be capable of making music that effectively copies the style of well known artists. I would think that Spotify, for example, would be able to make whole playlists of generic relaxing piano music and push them to listeners. I also think that for a lot of listeners who have music as background, as long as the sound is right and there is some nice broken chords around simple harmonies that would be enough to keep them happy.Â
As writers we know that even though the best tunes sound simple there is always something that elevates them above the average, but if the streaming services push enough AI generated content maybe lots of people won’t notice the difference.Â
On the other hand, as AI generated content becomes more prevalent everywhere perhaps people will start to place a higher value on work that is made be actual artists. It might lead to a stronger connection between listeners and their favourite artists, and a boost to live music.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, interesting reading. I agree that because there's not much we can do about how AI music will infiltrate the playlists the best thing to do is focus on making music that means something to us. Some of the listening audience won't care either way but hopefully the people that do care will make stronger connections to the artists and music they value. Fingers crossed anyway!
I don't feel encouraged by the fellowship of more bots, when there are already so many ghosts around. Some thoughts on my side: - if there's business going on, things like this appear. - bots will never be able to compose heartful music. If you hear a released one, please name.
-it's sad when it comes to editorials. Never rely on one thing. - Â "It seems clear that AI is/will be capable of making music that effectively copies the style of well known artists" - I wouldn't sign that. there's still a MAJOR difference between VST and real acoustic and bots can't play acoustically :) There will be always a need for an attentive listening. - if your audience really does not care a tiny bit about what music/artist they're listening to or what's going on in there, you should question your audience. At least I don't have a interest in those. - whenever there's an opportuniy, don't extra support it. - and like @Francisco said, when you really focus on nothing else than yourself and your music and the beauty of it and work on it, this limits your pain looking to the side.
I share most of Francisco thoughts about it. But... New technology often has two sides: threats and opportunities.
AI could also be able to help us. When finding new ideas, when perfecting our sound (some audio software is already equipped with AI components), when creating visuals for promotion, writing bios, press releases. Just to name a few.
In addition, I even dare to go so far as to say that AI could offer opportunities in composing; Where Stockhausen and Boulez once used chance factors to realize their musical ideas, AI could also become a tool that offers us possibilities. In that sense we could also see it as a possible extension of our tools, of our instruments.
What would be bad is if AI is used by streaming platforms or 'composer factories' to eliminate the human factor with the aim of paying less to real people like us.
But like Francisco says, that seems to be -even without AI- already the case. So, let's focus on ourselves. With or without use of AI.
I don't have a good feeling about it. And yes, as you've mentionned, it will only become harder than ever for us artists to make it to editorials because they will be filled with AI music and fake artists who don't need to be paid. (which let's be real, it's pretty much already the case...)
All i can say is focus on yourself, focus on your music, focus on building a fan base. take some power away rom Spotify... don't depend on them so much.
AI music will never be as good as true, heartfelt, human compositions. Whatever happens, it's out of our control so again, let's focus on ourselves.
