Do you tend to wait for inspiration to hit to compose music or you think that creativity comes in waves and in order to catch it you have to be consistent and 'force' yourself to sit at a blank page (sort of speaking) long enough until it comes?

I also go with both here. Good question. If you force too much, like composing under stress or when you feel exhausted, it will never go out great. But nothing comes from nothing. Consistent motivation and just playing and improvising around helps a lot to compose what you feel like and what you should express.
In my case, I don´t usually force my self to write music. The more of my inspiration comes from improvisation and wait for an idea to come. Later, I develope it.
This is a very interesting topic! I actually write whenever I feel like it. Sometimes I have a whole day planned of other activities, and I drop everything because I have the urge to write. I never push myself, these spontaneous writing moments come frequently enough to keep consistency :) I do stimulate myself to actually finish up an idea, otherwise I end up with 20 unfinished pieces haha.
I force myself once in a while. It works out sometimes. But I think going with the flow is the best way to create and listen to music. As a composer I do both but when creativity comes in I don't stop until I ran out of inspiration.
I have learned that it just happens. I can't force it and I have no idea when it happens. I was worried many times because I hadn't composed anything in a while and my mind felt completely empty music wise. A week later I sketched three new ideas 🤷♂️. If I just sit down at the piano to improvise I have my cellphone ready to record ideas or when I'm at my keyboard I record the session in logic and later scan for ideas worth developing.
Personally, it is both. Sometimes whenever i want to compose new music i force myself trying to compose something i like. Sometimes a melody comes to my mind but it often happens when I don't have the possibility to sit at the piano and therefore I forget it. This is why I prefer to force myself to sit down at the piano and play something, hoping I get the right inspiration.
At the end of the day, if you are a creative person, the ideas will come to you sooner or later, but I still think that if you force yourself to wait for inspiration you certainly have a better chance of finding it.
